Tips for Getting Back Into Life After Going Through Rehab

If you have recently finished going through rehab, congratulations are in order. Although experimenting with drugs in the first place was certainly a mistake, the decision to get help for your addiction was a brave one. In addition, successfully completing a rehabilitation program takes a great deal of hard work and courage. If you attended a residential treatment program, however, you may be finding it difficult to get back into the swing of things. Use these tips to help you get back into life and to help you enjoy the new life you have started.

Tip #1: Don’t Feel Obligated to Answer Questions After Rehab

If you have moved back into your old community after rehab, you will probably discover that people have noticed that you were gone. While you were gone, rumors were probably flying about where you were. In all likelihood, the rumor did circulate that you were in a rehabilitation program because your drug problem was probably obvious to everyone in the neighborhood. Nonetheless, you don’t need to feel obligated to confirm these rumors.

Although it is certainly a very rude thing to do, you will probably have some people actually ask you if you were in rehab. If this is the case, you can just simply smile politely and say, “I don’t care to discuss that, thank you.” Sure, the person will most likely go away from that conversation assuming that you were at a rehabilitation center, but that person also received the clear message that it is something that you don’t want to talk about.

Many people that go through rehab attempt to make up a story to excuse away their absence. This is a bad idea for a number of reasons. First of all, it can become difficult to keep your story straight and, sooner or later, it will become apparent that you are a liar. Second, when you were still abusing drugs, you most likely lied often in order to get money to pay for your drugs. Getting back into the habit of lying can start you back down a slippery slope of deceit that can lead you back to drug use.

Tip #2: Get Involved with the Community After Rehab

In order to get back on your feet after completing rehab, find ways to get back involved with your community. Of course, you need to avoid those community members that were a negative influence on you. Otherwise, you risk the chance of getting caught back up in the crowd you were running with before. As a result, you might find yourself feeling pressured to use drugs again. Instead, find positive community members to surround yourself with. Do some volunteer work or join clubs that include members that will be a positive influence on you.

Tip #3: Spend Time with Your Family

Although your family members most likely visited you while you were in rehab, it is not the same as spending time with them outside of the treatment facility. In addition, while you were abusing drugs, many days of precious time for you to spend enjoying your family were lost. Now that you are out of rehab, make it a point to spend time with your family members and to truly enjoy them for who they are. The more you appreciate the people around you, the stronger your support system will be and the less likely you will be to abuse drugs again.

Tip #4: Find a Job

After getting out of rehab, it is easy to feel a bit lost and to lack motivation to move toward the future. Instead of sitting around at home, get out there and actively seek out a job. Just the process of interacting with prospective employers and talking to people that are of a good influence will help boost your confidence and get you back into the groove of things.

When you do land that job, the time you spend at work will help keep your mind occupied. This will help you resist cravings as well as help you to stay away from the situations and people that make it more difficult for you to resist temptation. In addition, the money you bring in will make you feel good as you start saving it or spending it toward making improvements in your life rather than buying drugs.

Tip #5: Take Advantage of Aftercare Programs

Most rehab centers offer aftercare programs. With these programs, the staff from the treatment center will monitor your progress and make sure you are staying on track. If you learned strategies for avoiding triggers or for turning down temptation, for example, the aftercare program will work with you to make sure you are actually implementing the strategies you used.

Some rehab centers follow a more laid back approach. Rather than actively keeping up with you, they maintain a “our door is always open policy.” If this is the case, be sure to take advantage of that option. If you are feeling overwhelmed after being released from the program or if you are still finding it difficult to resist abusing drugs, be certain to contact the treatment center and get help right away.

After being released from a rehab center, you deserve to celebrate in a positive way. Congratulate yourself for making it through and for having the strength to confront your problem. Celebrate each day that you stay clean from drugs. You might even want to set mini-goals and, once your reach them, reward yourself in some way. For example, if you manage to stay clean and to steer clear of triggers for one month, reward yourself with a nice dinner or that new watch you have been dreaming of.

At the same time, don’t be afraid to ask for help when you need it. The worse thing you can possibly do is try to get through the process alone, only to fall back off of the bandwagon and have to start all over again. You deserve better than that, so take advantage of the help that is available and stay clean for the rest of your life.
